Instructions: Pick anything that is causing you stress, and then (1) uncover the underlying reason you feel it’s a threat (primary appraisal) and why you feel you lack coping ability (secondary appraisal). Explain in a concise short-to-medium size paragraph your Primary Appraisal, and your Secondary Appraisal. You must articulate the underlying reason why you feel its a “threat” and why you feel you “lack coping ability”. Then, (2) try creating new appraisals to resolve the stress. Perhaps uncovering the heart of why you feel stress can lead you to new ways of dealing with the stress in your life.
– Create your own post in which you describe the primary and secondary appraisal, and then new ways of thinking about your stress. The goal is to explore and uncover what has always been there (appraisals) even though you may not have been aware of them.
Practicing the Assignment This Week
We are going to use this important stress model to help you understand your own stress.
Why do you feel stress? If we can uncover or unlock that answer, you can then directly address the stress and remove it. As a reminder from the first part of this page, stress is slowly killing you (!) so it is critically important to take an active role in uncovering and dealing with your stress.
Just as the first part of the course was uncovering how the Situation influences us, now in the second part we are uncovering how Appraisal influences us. More specifically for this assignment, the influence of primary and secondary appraisal: the appraisal of threat, appraisal of coping ability.
The purpose of the assignment this week is to help you uncover this information.
For example, what is causing you stress right now? And, what is your Primary Appraisal / Secondary Appraisal of that situation?
