Comparing islamic and christan empires

Based on the lecture and book A History of the World in 100 Objects MacGregor chapters, use any chapter what are the greatest similarities and/or differences between the Byzantine and early Islamic empires? Note: a difference in religions cannot be one of your analytical categories. Your answer needs to dig deeper than this.
