Latin American Studies in Art History

TOPIC: In the wake of the Mexican Revolution, muralists like Diego Rivera often presented didactic images of how virtuous, post-revolutionary men and women should behave. How did less-didactic, more dissident practices respond to Mexican muralism? In your response, compare and contrast muralism with Mexican surrealism and/or U.S. Chicanx activist art.

Guidelines:
Essays should be around 4 pages in length, 1.5 spaced. Each paper should include at least: one introductory paragraph (a thesis statement where you answer the question!), four paragraphs that discuss four artworks at length, and a conclusion. Minimum: 6 paragraphs min.
All essays must demonstrate knowledge of at least two (02) of the readings and at least four (04) artworks in the study guide.
Important: You need to state the information of the reading and of the four artworks (author/culture, title, year/period). Example: According to art historian Edward Sullivan, paintings like Francisco Ollers Hacienda La Fortuna (1875) used the idioms of Impressionism to reflect on Puerto Ricos political problems.
All essays must be written in full sentencespoint form answers are not acceptable. Criteria for assessment include: answering the question (!); ability to state a clear thesis at the beginning and end of the essay; close analysis of four (04) artworks details (rather than vague, sweeping statements); discussion of ideas from at least two (02) readings: ability to formulate an argument; ability to connect art objects to a larger historical and theoretical context; fluidity of writing.
